Yamal Makes History as Youngest Euro Scorer, Propelling Spain Past France to Final

Lamine Yamal

In a thrilling Euro 2024 semi-final, Spain overcame France 2-1, with 16-year-old Lamine Yamal etching his name in the history books. The young star became the tournament’s youngest-ever goalscorer, propelling Spain into the final.

The match in Munich started with France taking an early lead. Randal Kolo Muani headed in a precise cross from Kylian Mbappe in the ninth minute. However, Spain quickly turned the tables in a remarkable four-minute spell.

Yamal, who will celebrate his 17th birthday on the eve of Sunday’s final, equalized with a stunning long-range effort. His curling shot from outside the box soared past the outstretched fingers of French goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Shortly after, Spain seized the lead. Dani Olmo skillfully controlled a loose ball and fired a low shot that deflected off Jules Kounde into the net. Following this goal, Spain expertly managed the game, controlling possession and stifling France’s attempts to equalize.

This victory marks Spain’s sixth win in the tournament, a new Euro record. They now stand one game away from claiming their fourth European Championship title, which would set another record.

France, despite boasting a star-studded attack, struggled to find their rhythm. Coach Didier Deschamps had benched Antoine Griezmann in favor of Ousmane Dembele, but this change failed to ignite their offense.

Interestingly, Spain’s veterans Jesus Navas (38) and Nacho (34), who replaced suspended players, performed admirably. Instead, younger defenders Aymeric Laporte and Marc Cucurella were caught out for France’s opening goal.

Yamal’s equalizer not only leveled the score but also broke the record for the youngest goalscorer in Euro history. He bettered the previous record by an astonishing year and a half.

As the match drew to a close, France captain Mbappe had a golden opportunity to force extra time. However, with only the goalkeeper to beat, he blazed his shot well over the bar.

Spain will now face either the Netherlands or England in the final in Berlin on Sunday. With their blend of experienced veterans and exciting young talents like Yamal, they’ll be confident of adding another trophy to their illustrious cabinet.
