With the Premier League kick-off fast approaching, the 2024/25 season introduces five new managers, each bringing fresh tactics and perspectives to their respective clubs. Here’s a look at the new faces set to take charge.
Arne Slot (Liverpool)
Arne Slot, a 45-year-old Dutchman, takes the reins at Liverpool, marking the club’s first new head coach in nearly a decade following Jurgen Klopp’s departure. Slot’s tenure at Feyenoord was marked by success, including an Eredivisie title, a Dutch Cup, and a run to the UEFA Europa Conference League final in 2022. Slot’s Premier League debut will be an away match against newly promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday, 17 August.
Enzo Maresca (Chelsea)
Italian Enzo Maresca stepped into the role of Chelsea head coach in early June, replacing Mauricio Pochettino. Maresca’s previous season saw him leading Leicester City to immediate promotion by winning the Championship title. With a near 20-year playing career beginning at West Bromwich Albion and a stint as assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Maresca faces his former mentor in his first Premier League match as Chelsea host Man City on Sunday, 18 August.
Kieran McKenna (Ipswich)
Kieran McKenna, 38, has successfully led Ipswich Town to consecutive promotions since taking charge in December 2021. This achievement secures Ipswich a spot in the Premier League for the first time since 2002. After retiring at 22 due to injury, McKenna transitioned to coaching, with roles at Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United before joining Ipswich. His first top-flight match will be at home against Liverpool on 17 August.
Russell Martin (Southampton)
Russell Martin, also 38, brought Southampton back to the Premier League after just one season out. The former Norwich City defender, who played 125 Premier League matches, previously managed MK Dons and Swansea City. Martin’s debut as a manager will see Southampton face Newcastle United away on 17 August.
Fabian Hurzeler (Brighton)
At 31 years and 110 days, Fabian Hurzeler becomes the youngest head coach to take charge of a Premier League team when Brighton & Hove Albion face Everton on 17 August. Hurzeler, who led St Pauli to Bundesliga promotion last season, will also be the first Premier League head coach born after the competition began in August 1992.
