Newcastle thrashed 8-0 in Australia friendly Kieran Trippier didn’t want to play

NEWCASTLE

Newcastle were thrashed 8-0 in Australia by an A-League All Stars XI on Friday, just two days after defeating Tottenham on penalties in the same country. The Magpies flew to the other side of the world just hours after finishing their Premier League campaign with a 4-2 win over Brentford in west London on Sunday.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe named an inexperienced team for the clash with the All Stars as he made 11 changes to the side which saw off Spurs.

And the Premier League giants found themselves 3-0 behind at half time as Ben Old, Nicolas Milanovic and Adam Taggart found the back of the net.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos then bagged a brace midway through the second period, with substitute Jake Hollman adding a sixth with less than 10 minutes remaining. Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Bozhidar Kraev then completed the rout late on.

Newcastle took virtually all of their star players to Australia, with the likes of Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes all featuring against Spurs. Kieran Trippier also started the first of the two matches but went off with an injury scare before being an unused substitute against the All Stars.

And the defender, who has been named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional Euro 2024 squad, had suggested prior to the trip he didn’t really want to travel to Australia for the matches ahead of this summer’s international tournament.
