Leeds ease past Sheffield to earn first win of the season

Leeds secured their first Championship victory of the season on their third attempt, defeating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough.

Daniel Farke’s team, who lost to Southampton in May’s play-off final, had a rocky start to the season. They were held to a 3-3 draw by newly promoted Portsmouth on the opening day and followed it with a goalless draw at West Brom.

Despite facing early pressure at Hillsborough, Leeds managed to take control of the match. They broke the deadlock 24 minutes in when Brenden Aaronson curled a shot into the net after a superb team effort.

Just two minutes into the second half, Leeds extended their lead. Mateo Joseph delivered a pass from his own half that sliced through the Owls’ defense, allowing Dan James to sprint forward and calmly chip the ball over the goalkeeper.

Some Wednesday supporters briefly thought their team had scored when Di’Shon Bernard connected with a long throw-in, but his header missed the target by inches.

Leeds had opportunities to further their lead, but Wednesday goalkeeper James Beadle made crucial saves to deny both James and Joseph.

With this win, Leeds moves up to fourth in the early league standings, while Sheffield Wednesday drops to 13th after suffering their second consecutive defeat without scoring.
