Joshua Zirkzee has outlined how he envisions fitting into Erik ten Hag’s system at Manchester United. The Netherlands forward, who joined United in July, describes himself as a ‘false striker.’

Joshua Zirkzee, previously with Bologna, made a notable impact last season by scoring 12 goals in 37 appearances and helping his team secure a Champions League spot. As he prepares for the upcoming Premier League season, he is set to partner with Rasmus Højlund in attack.

In an interview with The Mirror, Joshua Zirkzee explained his unique playing style: “I occasionally drop deeper into midfield, not for my own sake but to support the team. I see myself as a ‘false striker’—not quite a number 9 or a number 10, but a 9.5! Being a bit different is a good thing.”

He continued, “I enjoy playing a pure game with moments of flair, like nutmegs, chops, and back heels. It’s about having fun on the field, but also knowing when to use those skills. I believe my intuitive play and technical ability make me stand out.”

Zirkzee missed United’s pre-season tour in the United States due to international duty at Euro 2024. The team is set to face Manchester City in the FA Community Shield on Saturday and will kick off their Premier League campaign against Fulham just six days later.
