Chelsea has concluded their investigation into midfielder Enzo Fernandez following a controversy over a video featuring a “racist and discriminatory” song. The club decided not to impose any sanctions on the 23-year-old, who has apologized to his teammates.
Fernandez came under fire after celebrating Argentina’s Copa America win with a song that offended many, including his French teammates. He apologized to the French players in the squad, and his apology was accepted. Enzo Fernandez has since rejoined his Chelsea teammates in Atlanta on their U.S. tour.
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca addressed the issue, expressing confidence that there would be no problems within the squad. “I don’t think there are any bad intentions from any of them,” Maresca said. “Enzo clarified the situation, and the club did the same. They are not bad persons or human beings.”
Fernandez’s teammate, Wesley Fofana, who initially condemned the video as “uninhibited racism,” participated in a team meeting with Fernandez to discuss the matter. Maresca described the meeting as a positive step towards resolving any lingering tensions.
The French Football Federation had also condemned the video. Meanwhile, FIFA continues its investigation, and any involvement from the FA could lead to a potential ban for Fernandez. However, Chelsea has decided to take no further action after Fernandez offered to donate money to an anti-racism and anti-discrimination charity, with the club matching his donation.
Chelsea captain Reece James emphasized the need to move forward. “It’s a difficult situation, and Enzo acknowledged he was wrong and quickly apologized,” James said. “I hope everyone can move forward with the situation.”
