Cristiano Ronaldo comes up clutch yet again! Superstar pops up with late winner to end Al-Fayha’s resistance in AFC Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese forward struck in the 81st minute of what had been a frustrating game overall for the Riyadh club.

Al-Nassr were dominant from start to finish against a stubborn Al-Fayha defence. The away side enjoyed more possession and were the only team creating any danger – the hosts did not have a single shot until very late in the game and it missed the target.

Ronaldo had the first big chance right before half-time when he chested down inside the Al-Fayha box and hit a shot, but it was saved by the goalkeeper. Aymeric Laporte had another opportunity shortly afterwards, but his effort from close range missed the target.

Al-Nassr pushed on in search of the opening goal in the second period but struggled to break through the home team’s defence. One promising attack on the hour mark saw Ronaldo drive into the box but his effort was blocked. Anderson Talisca was the next star to come close to breaking the deadlock when he got onto the end of a pass, but his shot went wide of the mark.

Finally, Ronaldo popped up with the vital moment when he combined with Marcelo Brozovic and bobbled the ball into the net to secure the victory for his team.

THE MVP

Just as it looked like his team were set for a dismal draw, Ronaldo popped up at the right moment to deliver an away win for his team. He had been one of their most dangerous players throughout and would have been kicking himself for seeing his first-half opportunity blocked. Eventually, though, he was able to nip in and make the difference in the continental clash.

Anthony Nwakaeme

THE BIG LOSER

Al-Fayha striker Anthony Nwakaeme will feel frustrated by his lack of involvement in this match. The home side struggled to get the ball to him, resulting in him dropping back in an attempt to get involved, but nothing went his way and the 34-year-old was totally unable to impact his team’s play.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Al-Nassr resume their battle for the Saudi Pro League title when they take on Al-Fateh on Saturday. Then, next Wednesday, they will host Al-Fayha for the return fixture of the AFC Champions League tie.
