Atletico Madrid beat Dortmund in first leg despite German side’s late surge

Atletico Madrid Dortmund

In a match that lacked the high drama of the previous encounter across town just 24 hours earlier, Borussia Dortmund’s performance against Atletico Madrid in the first leg left many surprised. After the initial half-hour, few would have anticipated Dortmund leaving with hopes for the upcoming semi-finals.

Throughout the first half, Dortmund appeared perplexed by Atletico Madrid’s consistent style under Diego Simeone, despite warnings from Edin Terzic prior to the match.

The lack of surprise for anyone except Terzic’s players was evident as the German side, currently placed fifth in the Bundesliga, conceded two goals due to apparent apprehension.

The atmosphere at Civitas Metropolitano was electric, rendering Dortmund’s attempts to control the game futile until the later stages.

However, Sebastien Haller’s 81st-minute goal provided a glimmer of hope as Dortmund headed home with only a one-goal deficit, proving that Westfalenstadion can be just as formidable as the home ground of Atletico Madrid.

Terzic’s halftime intervention deserves acknowledgment, as Dortmund emerged from the break rejuvenated after appearing despondent and vulnerable in the first half.

Mats Hummels, a veteran of the club’s last appearance in the semi-finals eleven years ago, was among those culpable for the team’s early struggles.

The match saw Dortmund falter under pressure from Atletico’s relentless attacks, with defensive errors leading to both of Atletico’s goals.

However, the introduction of Julian Brandt at halftime injected renewed energy into Dortmund’s play, allowing them to assert control and create opportunities.

Despite a valiant effort, Dortmund was left to rue missed chances, including Brandt’s late header hitting the crossbar.
