Arsenal is currently negotiating with Real Sociedad to sign Spain midfielder Mikel Merino. Merino played a crucial role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory. He participated in all seven matches of the tournament and scored a late winner against Germany in the quarter-final.

With less than a year remaining on his contract, Merino’s situation could make it easier for Arsenal to secure the deal. If they don’t reach an agreement, Merino can negotiate with other clubs in January for a free transfer.

This potential signing comes after Merino’s teammate, Martin Zubimendi, rejected a move to Liverpool earlier in the week. Zubimendi chose to stay with Sociedad after the club convinced him to remain.

If Merino joins Arsenal, the 6ft 2in central midfielder would bring a strong presence to the Gunners, especially in set-piece situations. Arsenal has already strengthened their squad this summer by signing Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori.

Merino’s versatility as a deeper-lying midfielder would likely complement Declan Rice. Rice played a ‘box-to-box’ role for Arsenal last season. Additionally, Merino would provide Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta with another option in midfield. He would compete with Rice, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard.

Merino is no stranger to the Premier League, having spent a year at Newcastle before moving to Spain in 2018. He also played alongside Odegaard during the 2019-20 season when the Norwegian was on loan at Sociedad from Real Madrid.

Last season, Merino made 45 appearances across all competitions and scored eight goals.

Arsenal has been active in the transfer market with both signings and sales. They sold Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham in a deal that could rise to £34 million. They also signed Calafiori for around £42 million.

Meanwhile, the future of striker Eddie Nketiah remains uncertain. Marseille showed interest in the 25-year-old, but no move has materialized. He is also being monitored by Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, but no bids have been made yet.
