West Ham United have signed Germany international striker Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee. Fullkrug scored two goals in five games for Germany at Euro 2024 despite not starting. He netted 16 times for Dortmund in 46 appearances last season. The 31-year-old striker will strengthen West Ham’s attack under new manager Julen Lopetegui.

Key Moments:

  • Fullkrug joins West Ham United after a breakout season with Borussia Dortmund.
  • Scored two goals in five substitute appearances at Euro 2024.
  • Signed a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

West Ham were reportedly interested in Niclas Fullkrug last summer, but he moved to Dortmund instead. One year later, the Hammers have successfully secured his signature. Expressing his excitement to join the Premier League, Fullkrug stated, “I think the Premier League is the best league in the world, and for me, it is the right time to move to England and play for a big club like West Ham.”

Fullkrug’s familiarity with West Ham’s Technical Director, Tim Steidten, from their time at Werder Bremen, played a significant role in his decision. Additionally, he looks forward to working under Head Coach Julen Lopetegui, believing Lopetegui’s playing style will allow him to perform at his best and score many goals.

“I love being close to supporters, and I’m really looking forward to meeting the West Ham fans. I feel strong, fit, and in shape, and I just want to get out there and start playing for them,” Fullkrug added.

West Ham needed an out-and-out striker, with only Danny Ings and Michail Antonio currently filling that position. Fullkrug’s addition boosts their attacking options significantly. He rose through the ranks at Werder Bremen and also spent time at Hannover 96 before returning to Bremen. He then joined Dortmund for £12.6 million. Last season, he scored 16 goals and registered 10 assists in 46 appearances, including a run to the UEFA Champions League final.

Niclas Fullkrug has 13 goals in 21 senior caps for Germany. He debuted in a friendly against Oman in November 2022, scoring the winner. He played a key role in Germany’s Euro 2024 campaign, scoring two goals as a substitute before their quarter-final exit to Spain.

Under Lopetegui, West Ham has been active in the transfer market. They signed highly-rated young winger Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras, experienced keeper Wes Foderingham, and Wolves centre-back Max Kilman. Dutch forward Crysencio Summerville and Argentinian Guido Rodriguez are also expected to join the club soon.

Fullkrug’s signing follows the club’s abandoned bid for Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran. The deal with the Colombian fell through.
