Luka Modric agrees new Real Madrid contract

Luka Modric will remain at Real Madrid until 2025 after signing a new one-year contract with the Spanish giants, according to reports.

The 38-year-old has taken a back seat in recent seasons to allow fresh talent to blossom and his contract was set to expire at the end of June.

However, his time at the Bernabeu is not yet over with a new deal set to see him sport Madrid colours for at least another year.

The Athletic claim Modric has already agreed a one-year contract with Los Blancos and the extension will see him take a lower salary as he steps back into a secondary role at the club.

Fans have long speculated on the possibility of Modric’s stay but hope seemed to dwindle when club legend Toni Kroos announced his plans to retire from professional football after Germany’s Euro 2024 campaign.

Madrid boast a fine selection of central midfielders, with Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham now at manager Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal.

The emergence of young talent has dented Modric’s chances of gaining time on the pitch, with the aforementioned quartet all earning more minutes than Modric in La Liga during the 2023/24 season.

However, it looks as if the Croatian does not mind his diminished role as he extends what has been a trophy-laden spell at the Bernabeu since making the move from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012.
